What does paint correction do and when is it worth it?

Paint correction is more than polishing - it is a precise process of removing swirls, micro-scratches and dullness. See when correction makes sense and what results to expect.

What is paint correction?

Paint correction is a precise mechanical treatment of a painted surface using polishing compounds and rotary or orbital machines. The goal is to remove or reduce defects - swirls, micro-scratches, wash marks, dullness and oxidation - without removing the base paint layer.

It is not a car wash with wax or a quick "buffing service" from a petrol station. Paint correction means several hours of precise work with a machine, inspection under correction lighting and panel-by-panel refinements.

What defects does paint correction remove?

  • Swirls and holograms - fine circular scratches visible in sunlight or under a lamp. Usually caused by poor washing, automatic car washes or dry wiping.
  • Micro-scratches - linear marks from branches, keys, road grit or careless washing.
  • Dullness and lack of depth - the paint looks tired, without gloss or reflection.
  • Paint oxidation - especially on older cars with single-stage paint or light colours.
  • Bird-dropping and chemical stains - if the acid has not eaten too deeply into the surface, correction can often remove them.

What paint correction does not remove

  • Deep scratches reaching the primer or metal - these require spot paintwork.
  • Mechanical damage such as dents or chips.
  • Chemical etching deeper than half of the paint thickness.

An inspection before quoting allows us to determine what can be saved with correction and what requires repainting.

How many stages can paint correction have?

Correction can be single-stage or multi-stage:

  • Single-stage - a gentle gloss improvement and removal of lighter swirls. Ideal before ceramic coating on a car in good condition.
  • Two-stage - deeper defect removal plus final polishing. A noticeable improvement on cars with clear swirls.
  • Multi-stage / Stage 3+ - full correction with a very high removal rate (over 80-95% of defects). Used on show cars, sports cars and cars with poor paint repair.

When does paint correction make the most sense?

  1. Before ceramic coating - the coating locks in the condition underneath it. It is worth making that surface as perfect as possible.
  2. Before selling a car - correction significantly improves the appearance and market value of the vehicle.
  3. When the paint loses depth and gloss - even if there are no obvious scratches, the car can look tired.
  4. After buying a used car - most vehicles picked up after a few years of use already have wash-induced swirls.

How long does paint correction take?

Depending on the scope of work and vehicle size, it takes from 4 to 16 hours. A full multi-stage correction on a large car often takes two working days. Good correction takes time - do not be tempted by "2-hour polishing".

What happens after correction?

Right after paint correction, the surface is exposed and unprotected. We recommend protecting it with ceramic coating or at least a protective wax. Without protection, the paint will quickly collect new swirls.

Paint correction at Oneway Detailing

Every correction in our studio starts with inspection under correction lighting and a paint thickness check. We define the correction scope, discuss the expected result and only then begin the work. You can visit us in Białołęka or at Okęcie in Warsaw.
